TREND SPOTTING AT VHIMW 2010 -Newzz

Five designers, five shows, five collections inspired by five different elements and then five senses of us human beings absorbing it all. Fashion shows are a window to the future; window to see what’s going to be in-vogue and become jure-de-rigueur of the fashion conscious. They are the trends, the ‘Highest Common Factor’ (which I think is the most lucid way to put it) that emerges from the different shows of different designers.

Van Heusen India Men’s Week made few bold trend statements and they are:

Snug fitted suits in classic two-button or single button style with double vents at the back. The snug fit look can be best described as a fit that looks a size small for the wearer. The look was pioneered by the American Designer, Thom Browne but then his snug-fit meant a fit that look a couple of sizes small. The jackets have shorter sleeve-length than the customary 2inches of the shirt cuff peeping out below and are narrower. The jacket length is short too, ending just at the middle of your butt. The pants end just at the ankle and are real slim fitted like the yesteryears’ drainpipe style. These slim trousers are usually flat fronts with front pockets and low waist. Virtually all the designer presented this look. Mind you, the snug-fit look needs a well toned slim body to carry it with style so better hit the gym.

The colour Brown in its various shades seems to be the ‘IT’ colour for the season to come. The ‘Brown’ was visible on Narendra Ahmad, Troy Costa and Ashish Soni’s collections.

Jersey is big for the Spring/Summer 2011 collection and it’s use is not just limited Tees but are being used for kurtas and drop-crotch pants in ANKY by Anjana & Ankita Bhargav, jersey jackets were part of Sanchita’s Varun Bahl+ Karan Johar’s and Manoviraj Khosla’s collection. The only bit about the Jersey material is that what we saw was a very fine count jersey, which at times was used as a blend with other material. (pic DSC_0006 by ANKY)

Prints are going to carry on dominating the menswear fashion. There are printed shirts, printed trousers and printed jackets. Karan Johar+Varun Bahl had sketches on New York life printed on almost everything, Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna had prints of topography on various outfits, Pratap block printed multi-hued stars on his jackets and trousers and Narendra Ahmad printed Japanese motifs on his creations. Epaulettes, box-pockets, zipper details and other such trims are adding lot of edge to menswear fashion. We saw shoulder epaulettes on shirts and jackets. We saw lot of utilitarian pockets featuring on jackets (even on the sleeves), shirts and obviously on trousers. Zippers – metallic as well as plastic ones on pockets, shirt and jacket fronts and side seam of trousers gave a sporty feel to them.

Collars and Lapels are seeing some change. Shirt collars are getting slimmer and shorter, which we found amply in Troy Costa’s, Ashish Soni’s, Rohit & Rahul’s and Wendell’s collection. The lapels on suits and jackets went from slim (Costa, Soni, CUE, Sanchita) to draped (Narendra) to shark fins like edges (in Manoviraj Khosla’s collection) to tuck and folded (K Jo+Varun Bahl).

Wow what a gr8 colleciton !!
